Apache HBase is the underlying storage technology that powers the new version of Facebook Messages which combines messages, email, chat & SMS into a real-time conversation. In this talk, I'll cover why we picked HBase for this use case, describe our work with and contributions to HBase, and operational experience & lessons learned running HBase in production at a large scale.

Kannan Muthukkaruppan, Engineer at FacebookKannan Muthukkaruppan is a software engineer at Facebook with interests in database technologies, distributed systems, compilers and language runtimes. At Facebook, he is the tech lead for the Messages product's storage team and works primarily on HBase internals. He was also responsible for creating XHProf, a light weight PHP profiler (now open source), and XHProfLive, Facebook's real-time function-level performance monitoring system built on top of XHProf. Prior to joining Facebook, he worked in the PL/SQL Compiler and Virtual Machine group in Oracle's database server team. Kannan obtained his B.Tech. in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras and an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley. |
