Paul Fremantle, CTO & Co Founder of WSO2

Paul Fremantle

Biography: Paul Fremantle

As WSO2's co-founder and CTO, Paul Fremantle spearheads the company's overall product strategy. Recognized by InfoWorld as a Top 25 CTO, Paul was responsible for simultaneously leading development of the groundbreaking WSO2 Enterprise Service Bus and Apache Synapse ESB.

Previously at IBM, Paul created the Web Services Gateway, and he was in the team that put the Service Integration Bus technology into WebSphere Application Server 6. Paul co-created the Web Services Invocation Framework (WSIF) while also co-leading JSR 110: Java APIs for WSDL, which produced WSDL4J.

Paul's involvement in open source goes back to the original Apache SOAP project, where Paul donated code to enable access to Enterprise JavaBeans. He has also led IBM's involvement in the Axis C/C++ project. He currently is co-chair of the OASIS Web Services Reliable eXchange Technical Committee.

Paul has published two books: Building Web Services in Java, 2nd Edition, and The XML Files, as well as many articles. He also has spoken at numerous industry conferences, including ApacheCon, OSCON, Colorado Software Summit, XML Europe, and Software Architecture, among others. He has an MA in mathematics and philosophy and an MSc in computation, both from Oxford University.

APIs are making business and technical functions both abstracted and re-usable, both within organizations, across divisions and between companies. If APIs provide an abstraction from services, then Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) provides an abstraction from the deployment. This session will explore open source approaches to APIs and PaaS and how to create new digital connected ecosystems. We will look at organizations who've done this: how, why, and what the results are.
