5 Principles for Enablement with (Almost) Nothing to do with Building Tools

Engineering Enablement teams have big dreams to support developers across their organization by smoothing sharp edges to help teams achieve speed and stability within the services they provide.

Our instinct can be to think about Enablement through the tools, services and platforms we build. However, the tools we build are not guaranteed to succeed or even be what teams are looking for; enablement teams must keep collaboration and shared goals at their heart.

In this presentation, I will share my experience while leading an Enablement Team supporting the iPlayer and Sounds teams within the BBC. I’ll talk through 5 principles we used to build support, make broad impact to teams and inspire change. I will give examples for how we applied these principles, the challenges we faced and the successes which enabled our team to expand our support to the whole organisation.

For the large number of varied teams across the BBC, they provide support, knowledge and tooling with a focus on development and release practices.
